Unlike other introductory theatre textbooks that are written for theatre majors and assume a considerable amount of previous knowledge, this text is designed for the general-education student in college-one who might not be familiar with many plays and has seen only a limited number of productions. Because it is counterproductive to refer to works that students might not be familiar with, Theatre as Human Action: An Introduction to Theatre Arts focuses on four well-known plays: the tragedy Macbeth, the American classic Our Town, the landmark African American drama A Raisin in the Sun, and the contemporary rock musical Rent. At the beginning of the text, each play is described with plot synopses (and suggested video versions), and then the representative works are referenced throughout the book. By using these four models, Thomas Hischak informs readers about theatre arts, stimulates interest in the art form, promotes critical thinking about theatre, and engenders more informed and critical theatregoers. Theatre as Human Action examines both the theoretical and practical aspects of theatre arts, from the nature of theatre and drama and how they reflect society to explaining the processes undertaken by playwrights, actors, designers, directors, producers, and critics. Finally, Hischak addresses students as contemporary theatregoers and offers ways to better view a theatre production, discuss it critically, and write an evaluation of the event.
